Lost

Alabaster with base
21″x 10 1/2″x 5″

I started to carve a woman holding a laughing baby. Instead, a man appeared holding the woman. She was so sad that I had to show why. There was extra stone on her back so I carved her lost fetus. Most sculptures I have carved I started out with a vision significantly different than that of the finished piece. People are afraid of carving stone, but as I tell my students, “if you make a mistake, you can just carve deeper and you will achieve a more interesting piece”. Commissioned pieces are a gamble in that I really do not know how the piece will turn out, but I always get a sculpture I like.
